January, 24 2012 - Kings to pay tribute to Ben Reinhardt
|
The Pembroke Lumber Kings are working this week to finalize plans for the official retirement of #8 most recently worn by Arnprior native Ben Reinhardt who last May completed his fifth and final season with the Kings.
This Sunday January 29th at 7:00pm, Reinhardt will return to the PMC where a ceremony will take place prior to the Kings taking on rival Brockville in what is the second half of a home and home series in CCHL regular season action.
The ceremony will take Kings fans back through five memorable seasons in which Reinhardt played an integral role in the Kings winning an unprecedented five consecutive leagues championships culminating with the historic franchise winning its first ever National Championship at the RBC Cup in Camrose, Alberta.
Reinhardt’s list of accomplishments while wearing the red and white is a lengthy one and doesn’t stop with the championships. He was named a league all-star on more than one occasion, was named the league’s top defenseman in 2010 and later that year received the league’s playoff MVP award. In 2009 he had the honour of representing his country as a member of Team Canada East in the World Junior A Challenge. He served as captain of the Lumber Kings in his final two seasons with the Kings.
Currently he is attending the University of Alabama at Huntsville on a full scholarship while playing with the UAH Chargers hockey program.
His character, leadership and commitment to the Lumber Kings organization and the City of Pembroke is as tough to match as his on ice accomplishments and for those reasons he is most deserving of this high honour.
Be sure to come out to the PMC this Sunday to be a part of paying tribute to Ben Reinhardt for his time in Pembroke and see his #8 in the rafters for the first time and also take part in a raffle and silent auction for game worn and new Reinhardt #8 jerseys.
Game time is 7:00pm, gates open at 6:00pm and tickets can be purchased at the door.

November, 14 2011 - Gonu the shootout hero
|

The Pembroke Lumber Kings needed a shootout to get past the Nepean Raiders 5-4 Friday night at the Pembroke Memorial Centre.
Lucas Gonu scored the game winning goal in the fourth sudden death round of the shootout as Kings' goalie Francis Dupuis stoned Keenan Hodgson on the next shot. Also scoring for Pembroke in the shootout were Travis Meyer and Maxime Lamontagne. Raiders captain Craig Cowie also scored in the shootout.
The Kings came out flying in the first period, as Brandon Gagne got the home team on the board just 28 seconds into the game. He was set up by Swann Boisvert and Nathan Siydock.
Three minutes later Boisvert got one of his own to make it 2-0 when he controlled the puck and scored on the wraparound. Zach Loesch and Brandon McGuire assisted on the power-play marker.
At the eight minute mark of the first, Maxime Lamontagne made it 3-0 when he put the rebound away after Raiders' goalie Matt Zawadzki made a big pad save. Gonu and McGuire picked up the assists.
Following the goal, Zawadzki was replaced in goal by Dylan Brind'Amour.
Jamie Olivier scored on the power play with five minutes to go in the opening frame to make it 3-1. Assisting on the power-play goal were Shaun Altshuller and Ryan Johnston.
Gagne restored the Kings' three-goal lead when he converted a beautiful feed from Boisvert on the two-on-one in the final minute of the first.
Pembroke came out flat second and had their lead cut to 4-3 within the first three minutes. Olivier scored his second of the night and Cowie scored 28 seconds later. Cowie added his second of the game midway through the third to pull the Raiders even.
In the overtime period, Pembroke had numerous chances to put the game away as they started on the power play, but extra time solved nothing.
Three stars: The Molson three stars of the game were Pembroke's Brandon Gagne first, Pembroke's Swann Boisvert second and Nepean's Craig Cowie third. The Travelodge fourth star for hard work and dedication was Pembroke's Ryan Crossan.

November, 14 2011 - Kings Drop One to Hawks in OT
|
TINA PEPLINSKIE

Despite a quick start by the Pembroke Lumber Kings at the PMC Sunday night, they came out on the losing end of a 5-4 overtime decision as they fell the the Hawkesbury Hawks.
With the goalie pulled in favour of the extra attacker Francis Landers' goal from the slot pulled the Hawks even 16.9 seconds to go in regulation and forced overtime. Hawkesbury carried the momentum into the extra frame, outshooting the Kings 3-0. Midway through overtime, Stephen Hrehoriak send the Hawks onto the ice in celebration when he walked out from behind the Kings' net and beat Francis Dupuis on the wraparound.
The outcome was disappointing for Lumber Kings' assistant coach Scott Mohns, especially considering Pembroke jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the game was eight minutes old.
"Because we got the early lead I think they thought it was going to be easy," he said.
The Kings downfall was not maintaining the momentum and doing the same things that brought the early success, according to Mohns, and most of all not adapting to the Hawks changing game.
"It equates to not getting the puck out and losing control in the neutral zone," Mohns said. "The machine started churning and we couldn't stop it. When the tide changes, it is easier to come from behind than to be the team that is trying to stop it."
Brandon Gagne opened the scoring for the Kings 34 seconds into the game when he picked up the rebound and buried it backdoor behind Hawks' starter Carmine Guerriero. Nathan Siydock and Swann Boisvert assisted on the play.
Less than four minutes later Maxime Lamontagne fought to bring the puck into the zone, spun around in the faceoff circle and fed a streaking Brandon McGuire, who buried the one-timer, ringing it in off the crossbar to make it 2-0. Sam Gleason also picked up an assist.
Boisvert increased the Kings lead to 3-0 after taking a short pass from Gagne, he undressed three Hawks and ripped a shot into the top corner.
The goal spelled the end for Guerriero after he allowed three goals on eight shots. He was replaced by Michael Comitini.
On a delayed penalty call late in the first, the Hawks controlled the play and Anthony Sanniti's point shot found its way through the crowd to beat Dupuis and get the Hawks on the board. Remi Elie picked up the lone assist.
A miscue for the Hawks 7:20 into the second resulted in the Kings regaining a three-goal lead when Lucas Gonu picked up the loose puck in the slot and ripped it into the top corner to make it 4-1.Liam Biard and Zach Loesch assisted.
Sebastian Meltzer cut the lead in half when he beat Dupuis glove side with 7 ½ minutes to go in the middle frame. Hawkesbury pulled within one at 12:26 of the third when Elie scored on the rebound. Holden Anderson and Hrehoriak assisted.
The Hawks out shot the Kings 36-25.
The Kings are on the road Friday night when they travel to Kanata for a 7:30 p.m. contest before hosting the Brockville Braves Sunday night at 7 p.m.
Three stars: The Molson three stars of the game were Hawkesbury's Sebastian Meltzer and Remi Elie first and third respectively and Pembroke's Brandon Gagne second. The Travelodge fourth star for hard work and dedication went to Pembroke's Swann Boisvert.

October, 17 2011 - Kings lose 3-1 to Nepean
|
The Pembroke Lumber Kings came up against a hot team Sunday night and weren't able to compete for 60 minutes so they found themselves on the losing end of a 3-1 decision at the Pembroke Memorial Centre.
With only three losses to date, the Nepean Raiders lead the Yzerman division with 22 points, and are tied for second place overall with the Carleton Place Canadians. Sunday night's win over the Kings is Nepean's eighth in a row since Sept. 25, including a 4-2 win over Cornwall last Tuesday night to hand the Colts their first loss of the season.
"We were beat by a better team," Kings' coach and general manager Sheldon Keefe said matter-of-factly after the game. "I thought we could have played better. They are a hot team and we're a team that's struggling to find our way. We didn't play our best game. We played well, tough and we had our chances."
The one positive was holding to Raiders to just three goals. Goalie Francis Dupuis made a number of saves as he stopped 28 of 31 shots Nepean fired his way.
Keefe called the Kings play in the first unacceptable as they managed just four shots, although the second was better he is still not pleased with the mistakes.
"Our guys know the recipe for success, which is playing as close to perfect defensively and offensively by outworking out opponent," he said. "We're not going to beat a team like this if we're not doing that."
The key to success for the Raiders, who were playing their fourth game in six nights, was playing a patient, disciplined game which coach and general manager Peter Goulet felt they accomplished.
He felt the Kings took it to them in the second, but that they rebounded in the third.
"They really battled in the second and did a good job," he said.
Goulet always looks forward to trips to Pembroke as the PMC is his favourite rink in the league to play in. The ride home after Sunday night's game would have been better than most for the coach, however, as it marks the first time the Raiders have won in Pembroke since he joined the team three years ago.
"It's nice to finally win up here," he said.
In the first it looked like the teams would head to the dressing rooms with a scoreless tie, that is until Ryan Johnston got the Raiders on the board with just 32 seconds remaining on the clock to give Nepean a 1-0 lead. Assisting on the power-play marker were Ryan MacLean and Dalen Hedges.
Midway through the second, Kings' goalie Francis Dupuis made a great toe save to maintain the one-goal margin. Four minutes later, MacLean got one of his own when he scored on the rebound after Dupuis made the initial save on Kenneth Neil. Also assisting was Craig Cowie.
Travis Meyer scored the Kings' lone goal of the night with less than four minutes to go in the second when he got his stick on Will Seeber's blast from the point on the power play. Swann Boisvert also assisted.
Early in the third, Neil rounded out the scoring for the Raiders. MacLean and Mac Weegar picked up the assists.
Pembroke applied the pressure late, but they could not get anything past Raiders' goalie Matt Zawadzki.
The Kings are on the road Thursday night when they travel to Cornwall to take on the Colts beginning at 7:30 p.m. before hosting Ottawa Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Kemptville Sunday night at 7 p.m.
Three stars: The Molson three stars were Nepean's Kenneth Neil and Ryan MacLean first and second respectively, and Pembroke's Travis Meyer third. Pembroke's Francis Dupuis was named the Travelodge fourth star, which is awarded for hard work and dedication.
Out of town scoreboard: In other Central Canada Hockey League action Sunday night, the Cumberland Grads hammered the Gloucester Rangers 7-1, the Careleton Place Canadians took it to the Brockville Braves 7-4 and the Hawkesbury Hawks edged the Kemptville 73's 2-1.

Add another win to the Pembroke Lumber Kings' stats.
The Tier 1 Central Canada Hockey League team defeated the Gloucester Rangers 4-1 at the Pembroke Memorial Centre Sunday evening in a strong showing for the home crowd.
The Kings outshot the Rangers 53-22, including completely dominating them in the third period, allowing only one shot on goal while firing 26 at Gloucester's netminder Jimmy Harrison.
